Mobile technology has reached its 20th year and it gets stronger and stronger each year. 20 years ago Global Systems for Mobiles (GSM) signed 15 operators in 13 countries for their mobile networks, now they serve 700 operators in 218 countries. 20 years ago it was not realised the capabilities that the mobile phenomenon had. Today we have seen how each year the technology vastly improves. We have also seen how they have become more accessible to more people of all ages in more countries. It can be seen that there is a social trend shift throughout the 20 years. Firstly with mobile phones being now seen as more of a necessity than a luxury as people want to be flexible with their communication at all times of the day. Mobiles can now be used to do more things through improved technology like business tasks, mobile internet and mobile TV. Mobile phones are also being used more as there are many networks to choose from, keeping the price down. Now 2.5 billion people around the world use mobile technology and over 2 billion mobile phones have been used in the UK. It took 12 years for the first billion mobiles to pass through but only a further 30 months for the 2nd billion to be connected. A research study has recently found that there are more mobile phones being used then actual people. For every100 people in the UK there are 116.6 mobile connections. This may be for business and personal use or UK and international use. Mobile technology is being constantly improved and still has a long way to go. There are hopes that soon half the population will have use of a mobile phone.
