Nobel prize
Nobel Prize for discovery that allows iPods and laptops to be possible

The Nobel Prize for physics was awarded yesterday to Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg for their discovery for the Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR). The GMR is a quantum mechanical effect that allows a huge amount of data to be pushed into small spaces. It works by weak changes in magnetism that generates larger charges in electrical resistance. This allows information to be stored on a hard disk and then converted into electrical signals that a computer can read. This discovery started in 1988 and it triggered the boom in the information age. The technology of the GMR allowed technology to be smaller and more portable. This discovery therefore allowed mobile phones, smaller laptops and now iPods could be possible in our lives. This discovery has shown to be a big impact on technology today and therefore worthy of this Nobel Prize and the investors will share the prize money of £755,720.
